I Did My Best was met with negative reviews from critics, who criticized Cook’s material as unoriginal and pandering.

Despite the critical panning, I Did My Best was a commercial success, selling over a million copies and becoming the best-selling comedy album of 2006. Cook’s popularity at the time, coupled with the album’s extensive marketing campaign, contributed to its commercial success.
